Survey and Awareness Campaign for Sanitation Project in 10 Peripheral Villages of Rourkela Steel Plant

The Steel Authority of India Ltd., Rourkela Steel Plant, awarded the consultancy for conducting house to house survey and awareness campaign to Academy. The Academy carried out a number of workshop-cum-awareness campaigns, focusing low cost sanitation programmes to villagers for creating awareness and adopting sanitary practices particularly, individual and public toilets. The report submitted by Academy to SAIL on awareness, design and costing was accepted and well appreciated.

World Bank Studies and Projects

Academy, as consultant, rendered services to World Bank in collecting information on the status of rural water supply and sanitation sector in seven states in India, viz. Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

Integrated Rural Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation Project in Uttar Pradesh

At the request of Government of Uttar Pradesh, the Academy prepared a report to lay down criteria and guidelines for selecting villages and districts to be included in the Integrated Rural Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation Project in Uttar Pradesh for the World Bank assistance.

Collaboration with Consulting Engineering Services (India) Pvt. Ltd. for promoting Low Cost Sanitation and Community Awareness

The Academy provided consultancy services in association with Consulting Engineering Services (India) Pvt. Ltd. in the following areas:

  • Identification of Low-cost Sanitation Alternatives for Madras (Chennai) city,
  • World Bank assisted Trivandrum Sewerage and Sanitation Improvement Project for Government of Kerala,
  • Low Cost Sanitation under the Environmental Sanitation Programme in the City of Madras (Chennai) and adjacent urban areas,
  • Community Awareness, Environment and Health Education Studies under the Environmental Sanitation Programme in the City of Madras (Chennai), and
  • Low Cost Sanitation in the City of Kozhikode (Kerala) and the adjacent Panchayat Areas.

Academy also provided consultancy services for World Bank assisted Integrated Rural Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation Project covering 120 villages in Punjab in association with Water and Power Consultancy Services (India) Ltd., a Government of India undertaking.

Low Cost Sanitation Projects

The Academy has prepared detailed project reports (DPR) on low cost sanitation for a number of towns to make them scavenging free by conversion of bucket privies to Sulabh Shauchalayas (toilets) and construction of new ones in residences where there were no toilets. The projects also included construction of Sulabh Shauchalay Complexes for commuters, floating population, rickshaw pullers, pavement dwellers and for such households which do not have space for individual toilets or cannot afford to have them. Schemes for training and rehabilitation of liberated scavengers and their wards formed as an integral part of these projects. It also prepared projects for establishing training facilities for the liberated scavengers and their wards in a number of States.

The Academy has prepared a number of projects for construction, operation and maintenance of community toilets with bath, laundry and urinal facilities for various authorities. The Academy has prepared designs of Sulabh Shauchalayas, maximizing the use of local skills and materials in a wide cost range. The objective was to satisfy the needs of the communities of different economic levels as well as suiting to their socio-cultural habits and attitudes. By giving designs of varying costs, the beneficiary has the advantage of choosing a design which is affordable and suits him the best.

Technology Transfer to Developing Countries

At the request of the Royal Government of Bhutan, the Academy prepared detailed project reports (DPR) for construction, operation and maintenance of community toilets with bath and urinal facilities on “pay and use” system at Thimpu (capital of Bhutan). Similar project for Kathmandu, Nepal was also prepared. The experts of the Academy visited South Africa, Sri Lanka and Ethiopia to advise their governments to improve the environment by following Sulabh model. At the request of some NGOs from Tanzania, Academy prepared designs and cost estimates of community toilets with bath, laundry and urinal facilities to be operated on ‘pay and use’ basis on Sulabh pattern. Technical advice was provided for setting up community toilets and human excreta based biogas plants in Kenya. Similar assistance was extended to other countries.
